It was supposed to be a lovely family trip to a water park, but the mom was insulted and eventually kicked out. The problem was not their tickets or her children, but something the mom wore. She was furious. Read more to find out what exactly happened!
1. Madelyn Scheaffer And Her Problem
Madelyn Scheaffer is a dedicated mother living in Missouri. Family always takes precedence over herself, and for that, she often forgets to take care of herself. Due to long-term fatigue and lack of exercise, she gradually became obese, which effected her everyday life. It wasn't until what happened in 2005 that she finally realized she needed to change.
2. An Accident In 2005
When Madelyn was preparing to shower one day in 2005, unable to move swiftly because of her weight, she slipped and fell into the bathtub. Instantly she felt a sharp pain spreading from her waist and through her whole body. Madelyn couldn't and didn't dare to move. Would somebody come to rescue her, or would she have to make her way out of the tub?
3. She Made A Decision
With the sound of an ambulance, emergency workers showed up just in time. However, Madelyn refused to move because of the unbearable pain and sent them away. In the next few days, she just quietly laid in the tub with a slipped disc. The pain slowly faded away, replaced by a sense of calm." It is a sign for me to lose weight," she thought, and when she opened her eyes again, she had made up her mind.
4. She Made It
Weight loss was a tough process, requiring unimaginable determination and motivation, but Madelyn did it. After 2 years of hard training, she lost an incredible hundred pounds and was still in shape after five years of dedication.
5. Confidence Was Built Up
At the age of 43, Madelyn weighed 170 pounds. In others' eyes, 170 pounds was still considered overweight, but she has never felt more confident or happier. Only Madelyn herself knew how much effort she put into her weight loss. Even though she knew her body was still not perfect in common sense, she was confident enough to make another bold decision.
6. Time To Show The Brand-New Herself
Madelyn decided to go to Adventure Oasis Water Park with her whole family, and this time she would not just sit around covered up. She pulled away her towel and proudly stepped into the cold water with her new black bikini, which at one time she never would have believed she would wear. However, when Madelyn immersed herself in her own world and new-found happiness, someone was watching and approached her.
7. Two Choices
Two staff members broke the peace, "Sorry ma'am, this is a family park, but you are wearing an inappropriate bikini bottom. They are too small." In the sunlight, Madelyn squinted at them in confusion. "Ma'am, you will either put on a pair of shorts, or you must leave at once." There was no trace of any emotion on the staff's features as they forced her to choose.
8. She Felt Alone And Confused
She stood frozen and silent, enveloped in the sense of powerlessness she had never felt before. Other women in various swimsuits were still frolicking in the park, but their chatter and laughter seemed a world away. Meanwhile, the staff members were still looking her body up and down, full of contempt.
9. What Is The Standard?
"It was not a thong, but a standard summertime bikini," Madelyn muttered. She couldn't help but glance at other women around her. They were younger and slimmer, and that's why they were wearing the same or even scantier swimwear and were not judged. At that moment, she felt a surge of anger.
10. Time To Take A Stand
"No. There is no way I'm taking such an insult," She thought. There might be a time when she would just grin and bear mockeries of her body, but it was not this time. There might have been a time when she had been taken down by all the judgments, but it was not this time. This time she stuck up for herself. She would not let anyone break down what she took so long to build up.
11. The Third Option
"I am not covering up," she said with determination, "and you'd better call the police to escort me out." No one wanted to back down at that moment. After a while, the two employees walked away in silence. However, that didn't mean they had raised a white flag. It was not long before the sirens came.
12. So The Police Came
Unexpectedly yet inevitably, the police were called to the park to kick her out. "We are sorry, but we have to do this." Duty is far more important than personal feelings. Madelyn knew all too well. As the police officers walked her out, they looked at her, and she could tell compassion and frustration in their faces.
13. Telling The World
No one should bear such discrimination alone. Madelyn let the world know her bewilderment and rage through Facebook and the media. Soon after, she received so much warm support from all over the world, which somehow cured her broken heart. She knew that this time she was not alone but had the whole world standing with her.
14. Change In Policy
Nobody wanted Madelyn's story to happen again. It was time for the park to make changes in their "appropriate swimming attire" policy and have a better orientation of park management. People were waiting for the new changes, for no one should suffer something like this ever again.
15. Stop Body Shaming
Indeed, body shaming happens to people of all ages, especially middle-aged women. Yet, women of all sizes and shapes should have the right to love and be proud of their bodies, no matter what circumstances. What matters the most is that you are happy with the way you look, but not try to conform to a stereotype.
