Tawny and Mike seemed to have everything, but they knew something was missing. The intrepid couple sold everything for a bus that became their home in pursuit of the life of their dreams. Let's see their amazing bus transformation!
1. The Couple Who Had Everything
To the rest of the world, Tawny and Mike McVeigh are a sweet couple living a perfect life, running a successful gym, owning a gorgeous house, and driving fancy cars. Deep down, though, the couple knew something was missing, only they couldn't tell exactly what.
2. Something Was Missing
The question of "what are we really doing?" plagued the couple until they planned their first trip to Europe. Once abroad, they realized how much they craved the freedom to travel, going wherever and whenever they wanted. And they made up their minds right after the trip.
3. Their Decision
The two decided to travel full time. To make that dream come true, the couple sold everything they owned, their business, their house and cars, all for a yellow 2004 international school bus. They were going to make this $5,000 bus the new home that could take them anywhere. But first, it needed a full and thorough renovation.
4. The Demolition Began
Mike spent 2 days taking all passenger seats out and replacing the metal flooring with new insulated flooring. Tawny had the vehicle's windows replaced with new ones that offered both privacy and insulation. Things were starting to get real up in there.
5. The Back Area
The car's rear section consists of a bathroom, the couple's bedroom, and plenty of storage space. Under the bed, they built 3 three feet by three feet drawers for clothes. They even created a book corner next to the bed.
6. The Front Area
The front section of the car is the children's resting area and kitchen. Mike and Tawny purchased a bunk bed for the kids to reserve more space under the bed for children's stuff. As for the kitchen, the couple designed an L-shaped kitchen with a built-in dining nook and painted it in an industrial style.
7. Repainted The Bus
After 6 months of renovation, they only had one last thing to do: repaint the bus. With the combined efforts of the whole family, the oily yellow bus was soon turned into a creamy white home. They named it Oliver and fantasized about traveling in their new home in the near future. However, a new problem arose.
8. Something Was Wrong
After just one road trip, they realized they had to change a lot. The biggest problem was the bulky bed: their kids hated it due to the fact that they could hardly sit up due to the small space. Tawny and Mike decided to remodel not just the bed, but the whole house. After a few more months passed, here's what they achieved.
9. The Renewed Bedroom
The couple replaced the bunk bed and lowered the couch on the left side of the bed to provide more room for the children. They also fully utilized the space under the couch: placing a wooden crate that holds about a dozen baskets. Now children can get their things easy peasy.
10. A Murphy Couch
Next to the children's bed is a foldable blue Murphy couch complete with fluffy cushions. Above it is a 40-inch TV and a world map. The whole family often gathers here for afternoon tea or a movie night.
11. The Mudroom
Anyone would be surprised by the mudroom right at the skoolie's front, and simply by observing this space you'll know the style of the home. Everything here, from the paintings on the walls to the miniature stove, is picked up on their trips. When Mike drives, he feels completely safe as his home is right behind him.
12. The Kitchen
The kitchen is quite different from what it was originally. Magnetic spice jars sit above refrigerators and the ovens are painted in a metallic rose gold. That way, they can easily find what they need while cooking. They even installed a stove on the back counter so the family can enjoy the winter mornings in Montana nice and warm.
13. The Pantry Space
They even added a shelving unit opposite the kitchen for dry foods like beans and lentils. When they need anything during cooking, all they need to do is turn around and grab something instead of rifling through drawers one by one.
14. Another Bedroom
It's not too much to call the travel buddies' bedroom a magical paradise. Mike and Tawny replaced the regular rear engine with a small bay window. With lots of fluffy pillows, a couch cushion in the corner, and a string of sparkling lights strung around, it is the perfect place to soak in peace when the weather is bad outside.
15. The Closet
It sounds impossible, but the couple had enough room to install an open closet in their bedroom! Next to those hooks where they hang their clothes is a vintage wooden trunk. They can put extra things in it, or put bags and hats on top of it.
16. The Bathroom
The bathroom remained mostly unchanged during the second remodeling. The bathtub in the photo is originally a wine barrel, which the couple cut in half to fit in the bathroom. With a copper showerhead and leaf decoration, the small space is full of pastoral atmosphere.
17. Work And Play Outside
Their outdoor life is anything but boring. As a content creator, Tawny often sets up a workspace outdoors and enjoys her working hours surrounded by nature. As for Mike, he likes to play video games outside, listening to the babbling creek while waiting for the screen to load.
18. A Mini Porch
When they're not traveling, the family can enjoy the mini porch they built at the skoolie's entrance. A Wooden roof and a beach chair complete with blankets allow them to fully enjoy the outdoors at any time of the day, and string lights provide a romantic touch if desired.
19. A Special Seat
Instead of a regular chair, the couple has constructed a special seat: a movable hammock. It's a perfect choice for them, as the hammock can be hung indoors and outdoors and tucked away when it's on the move. Tawny often reads magazines on her beloved hammock in their mudroom.
20. Into The Woods
Two years ago, they decided to live their own lives, and the couple is ready for more adventures. "We're disappearing off-grid to our secret spot in the Montana woods." Said Mike. We are all trying to find our own path to inner peace, and it seems that Mike and Tawny have already found theirs.
