Since 1913, people have been storing food in the refrigerator in order to keep them fresh. But some ingredients are simply not made for colder temperatures. Here are 10 foods that are better kept elsewhere, which will be a total surprise.
1. Garlic
Because of the added moisture, garlic deteriorates even quicker when put in the refrigerator. The best place to store garlic should be somewhere dry, at room temperature, and with good air circulation.
2. Bananas
If you pick up any still-green bananas, don't put them in the refrigerator because the warmer room temperature helps to finish the ripening process. Besides, the temperature in the fridge can have a negative impact on the fruit's cell walls.
3. Eggs
Normally you'd find it quite surprising that eggs shouldn't be put in the refrigerator. But if you're in Europe, you can keep them elsewhere because eggs in this region are not sterilized and the egg shell is a good barrier.
4. Tomatoes
Tomatoes shouldn't be put in the fridge because the membranes can easily become damaged and the flavor will be dampened as a result. If you have too many of them, try canning or roasting instead.
5. Bread
Don't put your bread in the fridge if you are going to eat it in a few days because the temperature can easily ruin the structure of bread and make it taste stale.
6. Coffee
Don't store your coffee in the fridge because it tends to pick up other flavors around it. In addition, the air is too moist for coffee to remain fresh. Instead, put it in a sealed container away from sunlight, and make sure it's somewhere dry.
7. Avocado
Avocado has a hard time finishing the ripening process and the temperature in the fridge will only make it worse. Once ripened, they can stay in the fridge until you're ready to eat them.
8. Cucumbers
As a matter of fact, cucumbers decay faster when stored in the fridge. So next time try to put them somewhere at room temperature and they may last longer.
9. Potatoes
The cold temperatures in the fridge may turn a potato's starch into sugar, leaving it discolored and tasteless. If you have too many potatoes, you'd better store them in a place far from sunlight, unwashed.
10. Melons
A whole melon can be kept in the cupboard because it has little impact on its freshness. But a cut melon should be covered and refrigerated.
